This Gothic romance is one of my personal favorites. I don't know why it doesn't get more credit. It is directed by Francis Ford Coppola who also brought you "Apocalypse Now and The Godfather. This is one of the most epic horror introductions I have ever seen. This film stars Gary Oldman and he does not disappoint. He is charming and terrifying. He performs the multiple phases of the legendary vampire in impressive fashion. Winona Ryder, and Keanu Reeves play the main love interest. I would say these two performances are the weak link in the film. This film might not be for everybody. The editing style and some the effects might be perceived as cheesy. These qualities all come together perfectly to create the ultra creepy atmosphere. It is a unique look and feel for such overplay subject matter. The other performance that stands out is Lucy played by Sadie Frost. Everything comes together in this film. Eiko Ishioka set the bench mark for costumes in film. The outfits will catch your eye and impress you with out a doubt. I don't have a lot of criticism for this film. All its flaws and all the cheesy effects add to the unique style and profound atmosphere. I give this a 9.5 out of 10. This is the horror film i have re-watched the most. I would recommend this to literally anyone. It is a great love story while remaining a strong horror film.
