Maniac Cop (1988)

Updated: May 13, 2022

A William Lustig directed piece of under appreciated, well put together, chaotic, nugget of 80,s nostalgia. Starring Tom Atkins, Bruce Campbell, and Robert D'Zar two 80's icons and one b-movie jawline to rule them all. (the chin , the jaw, and the stash)I love anything original, Larry Cohen did not phone it in when he wrote this, some of this dialog is still relevant today. I love the news coverage and interviews of the public. This was a nice violent entertainingly grotesk surprise. There is plenty of story to keep you tuned into the story including cop on cop infidelity, murderous karens, and lots and lots of police brutality. The characters are well written, I love Victoria Catlin as Bruce Campbell's wife. She has a very short role but puts in one of the best performances. Robert D'Zar is super effective as the maniac cop, he is very scary as a largely obscured object. He spends the film murdering innocent people and pinning the murders on Bruce Campbell's character. The end of the film wraps up the film appropriately. I would recommend anyone watch this lost treasure. You might just learn something. I give it high 7 out of 10. I have already watched this multiple times and enjoy it every time.
