The Countess (2009)

Updated: Sep 5, 2022

I'm not sure this movie is talked about much in the horror community. It is a slow burning period piece about a 17th century countess who believes she must bath in virgin blood to maintain her beauty. Sounds like horror to me. There is a lot of aristocratic dialogue about maintaining wealth and power. This is not a typical gore flick, there are no scary monsters or supernatural elements at all, this is subtle. Julie Delpy is the lead who has a bitch face that rivals Clare Higgins in Hellraiser. The backstory to Erzebet (the countess) is short but to the point. She was raised as prime candidate to become a sociopath. Julie wrote, directed, and starred in this impressive story. All the costumes and settings look good, likewise the sound design and score are effective. All the performances are good and there are very few obvious flaws I can find. There is a little violence meant to drive home how much of a narcissistic bitch Erzebet is. She is horrible and by the end of the movie you really grow to hate her. I would recommend this to most people, it is not a straight up horror movie but it can be hard to watch at times. I give this one a 7.5 out of 10. I find it very entertaining and scary. Everybody scares different and this one does it for me. Check it out, but not if you're too squeamish.
