The opening of this film is effectively a creepy stalker scene that establishes the menacing presence of the film's antagonist. In a short amount of time the scene builds the tension and mood that sets the tone for the rest of the film. The film has the look and feel of the decade it came from, in the opening credits and sound track most notably. The cast is loaded with the experience of the likes of Josh Hartnett, Clea Duvall, Elijah Wood, and Robert Patrick. The entire cast is very talented. Directed by Robert Rodriguez, who also directed the El Mariache, Machete and Spy Kids franchises among much much more. The film does a good job of creating tension and suspense throughout the film but still throws a few cheap jump scares and plenty of fake teen drama. The story is a mashup of the Breakfast Club and Invasion of the Body Snatchers but on drugs! It provides a solid ending that some might see coming. Overall, I give this an 8 out of 10; I think this film is a lot of fun. The concept is not that original but it is well done and supplies all the drama and suspense that should be expected. My main complaint would be the dated soundtrack and CG. I wish they used more practical effects in this decade.
