The Prowler (1981)
Updated: Mar 7
Another classic from the most prolific year in the slasher genre history. The Prowler is a dear john slasher with a "twist". It was directed by Joseph Zito, who also directed Friday the Thirteenth chapter four and some random action movies, though The Prowler came before all that. It stars Vicky Dawson as one of my favorite final girls of all time. In horror two of my favorite final girls are two blondes, Vicky Dawson as Pam and Amy Steele as Ginny. Things were different in the eighties, when you saw someone with a mask you were sure they were a slasher. These girls were smart enough to know that. For me, this movie belongs at the bottom of the top tier of eighties slashers. The Prowler boasts the special effects talents of Tom Savini and it shows. We even get treated to one of Savini's favorite effects: an exploding head. I give the prowler a 7 out of 10. It is a pretty standard format for slashers but done well.
